Mexico Tourism Industry hit by Drug Violence

Due to violence in Mexico, foreign tourists, mainly Americans,, and business figures declined around 95% in some regions of the country. This has happened for the second successive year in a row that tourism industry has been down in the country.

The blend of drug and gang related violence in the country, coupled with the recession in the United States, has tightened the grip on tourism, which is country’s third biggest source of profit.

In the year 2009, swine flu scare also hit the country’s international tourism numbers.

In dollars and cents, the fall in tourists coming to the country has meant that tourism profit totaled to just $11.3 billion in last year as compared to $13.3 billion in 2008.

Helping to fuel tourists' fear of visiting Mexico is the fact that 18,000 people have been killed in Mexico since the government ordered war on drug cartels in 2006.

Even though tourists fear getting caught in the violence, many business owners in the country has announced that tourists are not in danger there.

But, the U. S. State Department has released a travel warning for Mexico advising tourists to avoid several areas.
