Mexico to provide International Status to Tepic Airport

According to the news published on behalf of the Mexican President, it is looking forward to set-up a small airport in the western city of Tepic which should be capable of connecting to international destinations.

The Mexican administration has decided to set up a small airport in the western city of Tepic capable of linking to international destinations, according to a presidential decree published during the week.

At present, the airport is served by just one carrier, Aeromar, with flights to and from Mexico City and is operated by state-controlled Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA). In 2008, the airport had passenger traffic of 91,810.

Further, talking to media, a spokesperson from ASA said, “Tepic could become attractive for more airlines, including foreign ones, after it becomes international.”

The verdict of the presidential office states that the airport’s infrastructure and services are well enough to have international traffic. The country has to advise the International Civil Aviation Organization of the airport’s new status.

Tepic is the capital of Nayarit and its population is just close to 300,000. Meanwhile, ASA has control over 19 airports all over the country and 13 of them are international. However, most of the airports are small in size; ASA also operates the Mexico City International Airport, the busiest airport in the country.
