Mexico Alfa Estimates 4Q Ebitda at $290 million; revenue at $2.37 billion

Mexican conglomerate Alfa SAB has announced that it expects to record 4Q earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization at $290 million.

According to the filling by Alfa with the Mexican Stock Exchange, Editda, a measure of cash flow, for all of last years is said to have surged 9 percent from the 2008 to $1.06 billion.

McMoRan and Energy XXI join hand to find gas in Gulf of Mexico

According to recent reports, McMoRan Exploration Co. and Energy XXI Ltd.’s shares cclimbed up after the oil exploration companies launched a superb discovery at one of its wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

Shares of McMoRan Exploration Co. increased to $3.54, or 38.5%, to $12.74 in very heavy midday trading. Previously, shares have touched a new 52-week high of $13.59. They have ranged from $3.14 to $11.63 over the past year.

On the other hand, shares of Energy XXI Ltd. increased 82 cents, or 31.2%, to $3.45. Earlier, shares traded at $3.58, eclipsing 2009’s peak of $2.77.

Mexico sells $1 billion of 10-year bonds

Mexico has decided to sell around $1 billion in global 10-year bonds, the government announced, its first major foray into international markets since two ratings agencies downgraded its sovereign debt late in 2009.

According to the statement issued by the finance ministry, the issue, which comes amid high investor looks for high-yielding assets, was oversubscribed by 1.6 times.

Moreover, the 5.125% notes were valued at 99.037 to yield 5.25%, or 142.4 basis points as compared to United States Treasuries.

Canada lends 5 mln H1N1 vaccine doses to Mexico

Canada will offer about five million doses of H1N1 flu vaccine to Mexico in order to fulfill immediate pandemic vaccine requirements,

As reported cases of H1N1 flu are decreasing in Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada decides that it can offer the doses with no worry about scarcity of vaccine here.

While talking to reporters, federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said, “The Canadian response to Mexico is testimony to the special relationship that exists between Canada and Mexico.”

Wal-Mart de Mexico announces 78 new stores

Wal-Mart de Mexico, S. A. B. de C. V. has recently announced that it has invested around 1.7 billion pesos ($130 million) in December to open 78 new stores all over the country.

During the announcement, Mexico’s leading hypermarket chain said that it has inaugurated new stores in Mexico City and 12 states – Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Mexico, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, Sonora, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatan – and added that 2,200 new permanent positions were produced.

Mexican retailer Soriana slashes debt by 30%

In proportion to its amortization plan, Mexico’s No. 2 retailer Soriana has recently announced that it has reduced its debt by 30% in last year from a year ago.

According to the statement issued by the company, which acquired debt to fund its 2007 acquirement of 200 stores from a rival, it has paid back 2.47 billion pesos from its long-term revolving debt program.

Earlier, the company has handed over 1.45 billion pesos in other down payments.

Till December last year, the company’s debt was 9.03 billion pesos ($709 million).

Remittances to Mexican Economy declined 14% in Nov 2009

According to the members of Mexico’s Senate, the most recent data on a fall in money sent home by Mexican employees staying abroad showed hard times are befalling the country’s poor.

While talking to reporters, Sen. Jesus Garibay Garcia and Sen. Rosalinda Lopez Hernandez said, “As a result of this, two million families will fall under the poverty level, especially in Mexico.”

As per the new report issued by the Bank of Mexico, the amount of money Mexican workers living abroad sent home during the first eleven months of last year declined 16%.

Mexican Capital Sets Guinness Record with Epiphany Cake

The Mexican capital sets a new Guinness record by preparing the world’s biggest Rosca de Reyes weighing 10.5 tons and measuring 720 meters long, which was enjoyed by local occupants.

Mexican Health Insurance covers 10.3 million people

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said that the country has improved its government-funded health insurance to cover 10.3 million people, or almost one in every 10, by the end of last year.

The Health Insurance scheme, founded in 2003 with an aim of universal coverage by 2012, covers treatment of 80% of the diseases that are most common in the country.

Moreover, talking to reporters, the president said that every child born after his inauguration in 2006 now has health insurance.

The president was talking to reporters at the opening ceremony of a new hospital in southern Mexico.

Mexico remittances fall 14% yr-on-yr

According to the report issued by the Bank of Mexico, the remittances that the country’s emigrants sent home to their families from a recession-bound United States came down by 14 percent year-on-year in the month of November to $1.5 billion.

Further, the Bank release said that remittances for the first time in 11 months of 2009 stood at $19.6 billion, a fall of 16% as compared to the same time in 2008.
